BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a British overseas territory, located in the Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico. The islands make up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, the remaining islands constituting the U.S. Virgin Islands.
The British Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke, along with over fifty other smaller islands and cays. The BVIs, as they are called, are a popular travel destination for sailors, fishermen, sun worshippers, and other independent travellers. Boating among the dozens of tiny, mostly uninhabited, islands is a great stop on any tour of the Caribbean islands.
A great way to see the islands is by boat. This is a paradise, since the islands are close together and well protected from the Atlantic. You wake up to sunshine and a blue sky, choose the cruising target of the day by pointing on a nearby island and set sail in a comfortable wind.

The island is about 10 miles long and 3 miles wide. From the eastern end of Tortola, Beef Island, to the west end, there are many spectacular white-sand beaches along the north shore. Most deepen very gradually and have light surf, allowing for very leisurely swimming. Most popular beach are: Long Bay, Lambert Bay is a very long beach, with moderate surf, and less clear water than several other beaches. Brewer's Bay is the only non-white sand beach on the island. The sand is a dark gold!

This area is sparsely inhabited, except for small neighborhoods in the North Sound area on its northeastern edge. Extending northeast from there is a chain of wooded hills accessible only by boat. Small islands in this area contribute to the very sheltered harbors in the sound. Snorkeling is a popular activity. Moorings are provided for the many yachts that visit the Baths and Devil's Bay.

It has a year round population of less than 200 on 15 square miles (38 sq km), which makes it the second largest island in the chain, after Tortola, but the most sparsely populated of the main islands. It is also geographically isolated, being separated by some 15 miles of blue water from the rest of the chain. The western side of Anegada consists mostly of a large salt pond sporting flocks of flamingoes. There are miles of beaches to enjoy. It is easy to spend a day on the beach without seeing another living soul.

If you have a dinghy or want to make a stop with your sailboat along the way, do yourself a favor and stop by uninhabited Sandy Cay right along the way to Jost Van Dyke. It has one of the most spectacular sandy beaches available, is usually not too crowded, and even has a path around the island so you can look at the local flora and fauna.
Norman Island
Norman Island is located at the southern tip of the British Virgin Islands archipelago. It is reputed to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's pirate novel Treasure Island. Norman Island is a well-known destination for cruisers and other tourists because of 3 water-level caves at the base of cliffs just outside the western edge of The Bight.
